Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) therapy, online

Ever notice that something hits you before you even know what you feel about it? That first jolt is what Deep Brain Reorienting works with. I'm Level 2 trained in DBR, and I offer it by video for clients in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Florida.

What DBR is

In the words of deepbrainreorienting.com, "Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)® is a trauma psychotherapy" that "aims to access and process traumatic experience by tracking the original sequence of physiological responses."

Part of that sequence is shock. DBR's own explanation puts it this way: "This shock response is called preaffective in DBR because it happens before the affective and defensive responses." In other words, before the fear, the anger or the shutting down, there's the moment of being hit. That's where DBR starts. You can read more about the thinking behind it on DBR's hypothetical basis page.

Who it's for

DBR describes itself as especially relevant "for cases that include early attachment traumas such as those that underlie dissociative disorders." If you're a complex trauma survivor who feels stuck, even after years of therapy, or a therapist who knows the theory but still gets knocked sideways, DBR is one more door we can try.

How it fits with the rest of my work

I'm an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist, IFS trained, and Level 2 trained in Deep Brain Reorienting. We can use EMDR therapy, DBR, parts work, or a mix of them. This process is about you, so we'll find the fit together.

Like everything I do, DBR happens by video. You're in your own space, and I'm right there on the screen with you. Curious? Get in touch. I can't wait to hear from you! Fees and superbills are on Services and Fees.

“This process is about you, so I'm happy to bring all my training to aid in your healing.”

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)?
It's a trauma psychotherapy that, in its own words, "aims to access and process traumatic experience by tracking the original sequence of physiological responses," including the shock that comes before any feeling. I'm Level 2 trained in DBR and offer it by video for clients in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Florida. More on Deep Brain Reorienting.
Can DBR be done online?
Yes. All of my sessions are by video, and DBR is no exception. We can talk it through first and decide together whether DBR, EMDR, parts work, or a mix is the right fit for you.
What does "pre-affective shock" mean?
It's DBR's name for the shock response that comes first. In DBR's words, "This shock response is called preaffective in DBR because it happens before the affective and defensive responses." Affective just means emotional: it's the jolt before the feeling.
