Online EMDR therapist, EMDRIA Certified

Got referred for EMDR and wondering if it can really happen over a screen? It can, and it's how I do all of my EMDR: by video, with clients in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Who this is for

Maybe you're a complex trauma survivor who feels stuck, even after years of therapy. Maybe it's religious trauma that has damaged how you understand yourself, or you're a therapist who's ready to do more of your own work. If you're an adult in Georgia, Pennsylvania or Florida and you're curious about EMDR, I'd love to talk with you.

I'm an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist and Consultant-in-Training. If you want the official word on what EMDR is, the EMDR International Association explains it here.

How EMDR works with me, by video

Lots of folks get referred for EMDR without really knowing what the process looks like, so here's the short version:

  1. I take an overview of your history and what you want to have change. You don't have to get into all your trauma; a "flyover" of your struggles is plenty.
  2. We see how much resourcing you have, meaning whether you can come back to calm after dysregulation, and I'll teach you ways to do that if you don't have them yet.
  3. We make a treatment plan, starting with the issue you'd like to see a difference in first.
  4. We pick a specific memory and find the image of the worst part of it. (Note: If you have aphantasia, we'll notice another sensory element that represents the worst part!)
  5. We use bilateral stimulation of some kind or multiple kinds (tapping, eye movements, marching steps, bilateral sounds) while you notice the belief and your body.
  6. We keep tracking the image and how distressing it is until the number decreases to zero or a manageable level. Sometimes this takes a single session, sometimes multiple sessions.

I walk through every step in more detail in Starting EMDR Therapy.

It's not all eye movements

Sometimes, we'll incorporate other means of taxing your working memory, like talking about a favorite memory or telling me your favorite way to make sweet potato pie. Others, I'll have you do simple math problems or clap your hands to a different beat than the dots on the screen. There are lots of creative ways to engage with EMDR, and I have many tools to help you do so.

I'm IFS trained and Brainspotting trained, too, so if parts of you have big feelings about this work, we can make room for them. And if a longer stretch of time would help, we can talk about an EMDR intensive.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is EMDR still effective online?
I can't promise how EMDR will go for anyone, online or in a room, and I won't. What I can tell you is that video is the only way I do EMDR. The EMDR International Association has published guidelines for virtual EMDR therapy, meaning EMDR led live by an EMDR-trained clinician online, not self-guided EMDR. If you're wondering whether it fits you, let's talk about it.
Can a therapist do EMDR virtually?
Yes, and that's how I work with every EMDR client. Bilateral stimulation translates to video in a bunch of ways: eye movements following dots on the screen, tapping, marching steps or bilateral sounds, sometimes more than one kind. The rest of the process (history, resourcing, a treatment plan, then processing) happens by video, too. I walk through it step by step in Starting EMDR Therapy.
